A Running Gait Analysis is a detailed review of a person’s running style to assess their biomechanics and identify any issues that might cause future injury.

The first thing we do with patients who come to our clinic for guidance on the proper running technique, is to get them outside (or on a treadmill) and running!

We record the patient’s movement so we can review the footage at a slower speed, assessing and analysing their movement patterns, stride cycle and overall body and foot position.

We then use this to educate patients about the best running technique to avoid pain, injury and improve their overall form and efficiency in line with their personal running goals.

What Areas Are Assessed?

Firstly, we complete a systemic kinetic analysis starting from the head, all the way down the body to the feet. This takes approximately 15 minutes. We record the patient moving so we can slow and stop the footage, to educate the patient about their particular running style.

The assessment includes:

  • Running technique
  • Cadence and stride length
  • Foot strike
  • Joint angles
  • Body position, head position and lean
  • Arms and trunk rotation.

After the initial assessment, we spend the rest of the appointment time discussing what we’ve seen with the patient. We provide guidance on adjustments to their running technique, along with exercises to practise away from the Clinic.

Where possible the assessment is conducted on a treadmill but we also undertake the assessment outdoors where people often feel more comfortable and demonstrate their natural running style more easily.

How We Can Improve Your Running Technique?

We work with runners of any ability to help them recover from, or avoid injury; or simply provide strategies to improve their running technique for enhanced performance and enjoyment!

Whilst accommodating each patient’s unique running style, we’ll explain any concerns we see in the assessment and ways to compensate or modify their technique to avoid injury.

Patients will practise the corrections that might lead to injury such as over striding whilst in the Clinic and then continue to embed these new habits over a few weeks.

We’ll often also prescribe an exercise strengthening program and stretches to address any physical issues, improve strength or range of motion to improve a person’s running efficiency and minimise the risk of injury.

If an injury has already occurred, we’ll treat that first and help guide the patient back to their normal activity levels.

We work alongside Active Feet and The Running Company; and will write patients a referral detailing the conclusion of the running assessment so that the staff can assist patients in choosing new footwear if necessary.

In subsequent appointments, patients provide us with feedback on their progress. We may repeat the analysis and review any exercises that have been recommended. We’ll assess the modifications that a patient has been making and continue to adjust the treatment plan.

Why Choose Your Foot Clinic?

Amongst our team are both professional and recreational runners, with extensive personal experience in the sport as well as working with professional coaches. All of our Podiatrists have completed running assessment courses to ensure we can support patients fully. We carry out video gait analysis assessment on site as part of the overall consultation time.
