A Running Gait Analysis is a detailed review of a person’s running style to assess their biomechanics and identify any issues that might cause future injury.
The first thing we do with patients who come to our clinic for guidance on the proper running technique, is to get them outside (or on a treadmill) and running!
We record the patient’s movement so we can review the footage at a slower speed, assessing and analysing their movement patterns, stride cycle and overall body and foot position.
We then use this to educate patients about the best running technique to avoid pain, injury and improve their overall form and efficiency in line with their personal running goals.
What Areas Are Assessed?
Firstly, we complete a systemic kinetic analysis starting from the head, all the way down the body to the feet. This takes approximately 15 minutes. We record the patient moving so we can slow and stop the footage, to educate the patient about their particular running style.
The assessment includes:
- Running technique
- Cadence and stride length
- Foot strike
- Joint angles
- Body position, head position and lean
- Arms and trunk rotation.
After the initial assessment, we spend the rest of the appointment time discussing what we’ve seen with the patient. We provide guidance on adjustments to their running technique, along with exercises to practise away from the Clinic.
Where possible the assessment is conducted on a treadmill but we also undertake the assessment outdoors where people often feel more comfortable and demonstrate their natural running style more easily.
