What do foot mobilisation and manipulation techniques involve?

Both foot mobilisation and foot manipulation treatments help to create freedom within the joints so the foot can return proper, pain free movement. They are two different treatments which we often use in combination within a consultation.

Mobilisation involves applying gentle pressure to move and glide the  joints and bones in specific areas of the feet. This technique increases the health of the joints and decreases symptoms such as osteoarthritis.

Manipulation is where high velocity movements are used therapeutically by our Podiatrists to release pressure and allow the joint to move more freely. This release of pressure (or cavitation) in the synovial fluid around a joint often creates a harmless, cracking sound; much like when people crack their own knuckles.

What conditions can be treated with foot mobilisation therapy?

The bones of the feet are the equivalent to the foundations of a house. Everything that is attached can be considered the walls. So by moving the framework into the right position, improving the mobility of the joints and allowing the muscles to work properly to support the foot, patients can experience a positive effect on everything else above, in the lower limbs.

The feet with their 33 joints means there are a lot of moving parts. Many conditions can be improved with the inclusion of mobilisation techniques in a patient’s treatment plan including:

Osteoarthritis is one of the conditions where our Podiatrists will most often use mobilisation techniques to reduce the symptoms of the disease. In patients with this condition, the joint becomes narrow and so people lose their normal movement. Through mobilising it we are able to improve the health of the joints.

What conditions can be treated with foot manipulation therapy?

Manipulation techniques help to address problems with the foot’s structure. Biomechanical issues such as a low or high arch can lead to difficulties for people over time. Moving the joints and bones and can lightly change the position, reduce restriction and address any associated pain and restrictions.

How often do you need this treatment?

These treatments are aimed at specific areas of the feet and focus on achieving a healthy range of movement through the joints.

Patients report that these treatments bring relief. The gentle pressure applied to bones and joints, adjusts the structures and helps return natural movement back to the feet.

We always use mobilisation and manipulation techniques alongside other remedies such as:

  • At-home stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Massage for the soft tissues of the feet
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Strapping, footwear, or orthotics
